Step 1 - Remove Torque Converter

Remove center bolt from engine pulley. Gently pull the torque converter until it is removed off the drive shaft. Take the evaporative solvent and a rag and clean all dirt, dust and belt residue. Clean both the converter and all the surfaces surrounding it on the go kart.

In a go kart torque converter, there are two pulleys: the driver clutch pulley and the driven pulley. In most cases, the driver clutch pulley will be the smaller of the two. Using the screwdriver or hexagonal tool (varies from model to model), remove the bolt from the center of the driver pulley.

This is done by turning the fixed cam that you are holding against the torque converter in a counterclockwise direction until it hits stop. You’ll have to do all this, while pressing the fixed cam against the torque converter. While still pressing, take the snap ring and place it back on.

This video will show you how to disassemble, clean, lubricate, polish, and reassemble a comet 40 series torque converter. You will need simple hand tools, and some wire attachments to get rid of rust, dry molybdenum spray for lubrication. Just watch the video, it takes too damn long to explain it.

Buying a complete torque converter kit gives you everything you need; engine mount plate, jack shaft with sprocket, drive and driven clutch pulleys, belt, mounting hardware, and instructions. The three most common sizes of go kart torque converters are 20 series (light duty), 30 series (medium duty), and 40 series (heavy duty).

What Does a Go Kart Torque Converter Do? These transmission elements help get the power you need from the engine down onto the area on which you're driving. The lower the gear and speed, the higher the torque, and therefore the higher control, especially on rugged surfaces like off road dirt trails.

Comet 340 Series Torque Converter System (Symmetrical) Comet 340 series torque converter system is for 2 or 4 cycle engines up thru 8 hp. Designed especially for jr dragster, go-karts and mini-bikes. Uses the same 3/4" top width belts as Comet's 20 series. Drive clutches come uncalibrated so roller kits and spring kits must be ordered seperate.

To create a go kart with a lawn mower engine, measure the size of your engine so you know how large your frame will need to be, such as a 5 to 7 horsepower engine for a standard-sized kart. Next, cut the materials to the right size for your kart, making the kart's width about 2/3 of your wheel base, and assemble them.
