  • A go-kart jackshaft is a mechanical component that transfers rotational force between the crankshaft and the axle. In essence, a jackshaft is a long shaft, which actually looks like an axle and is located in between the engine crankshaft and the rear axle.

The jackshaft is the shaft with the brake disk on it. The drive shaft is in the tunnel with the cogs that drive the track. There are two "jackshaft" bearings and two "driveshaft" bearings. There is a jackshaft and drive shaft bearing in the chaincase.

Jackshafts are a great solution for go-karts that aren’t able to connect the rear axle directly to its power source. For go-karts this can come in handy if you have wide tires, a short axle or a narrow frame. A Jackshaft setup is more commonly found in off-road and homemade go-karts, compared to racing go-karts.

An axle is a shaft on the rear of the go-kart where each end is connected to a wheel via a hub. There is a sprocket located towards the center of the axle that is connected to the crankshaft or the jackshaft of a go-kart via a chain. The axle provides rotational motion to the rear wheels from the torque that is generated through the engine.

Absolutely the jackshaft disc would have more braking force than the axle disc. An example is a 5:1 gear ratio. For every single linear inch of the axle disc that rotates through the axle brake pads, 5 linear inches of the jackshaft disc would rotate through the jackshaft brake pads. So you get 5 times the braking power that way.

To create a go kart with a lawn mower engine, measure the size of your engine so you know how large your frame will need to be, such as a 5 to 7 horsepower engine for a standard-sized kart. Next, cut the materials to the right size for your kart, making the kart's width about 2/3 of your wheel base, and assemble them.
